Courageous fundraising is all about breaking out of your comfort zone and learning to ask for what you need without fear or hesitation. So why does courageous fundraising work?

1. Confidence Attracts

What we don’t mean though is to be overly confident, e.g. the overly excited car salesman whose commission breath you can smell a mile away. What we mean is cool, relaxed confidence. Be appreciative that someone is kind enough to talk with you and hear you out, and stand firm in your resolve that your mission is worthwhile.

2. Transparency Builds Trust

Have you ever been in talks with someone who revealed information about themselves that might not have exactly painted them in the best light, but somehow their brutal honesty made you trust them more? This can be true when talking with donors as well. Being upfront about your needs and not doing the “song and dance” helps build trust with potential donors. Bold and unapologetic asks show that you're honest about the requirements of your organization, allowing donors to see exactly where their money is going and how it contributes to your cause. This transparency can foster a strong sense of trust and increase donors' willingness to contribute.

3. Bigger Asks, Bigger Results

People are often willing to give more than we might assume. By making a larger ask, you open up the possibility of receiving more significant donations. Even if the donor negotiates down, you may still end up with more than if you had initially asked for less. If you ask for $1,000, you might get $1,000. However if you ask for $10,000, you might get $5,000. In reality, the amount of work that goes into asking for $1,000 vs $10,000 is not that different. So you may as well aim high because you will likely end up with more for your mission than you would if you aimed low. In fundraising, it's often true that you don't get what you don't ask for. So just try! You might be surprised at what happens.

Here are a few strategies to help you embrace courageous fundraising:

  1. Create a compelling narrative: Tell your organization's story in a compelling and authentic way. Highlight the urgency and importance of your cause and explain the impact of potential donations clearly.

  2. Build strong relationships: Fundraising isn't just about money. It's about building strong relationships with donors. Show genuine interest in your donors and involve them in your organization beyond just giving money.

  3. Practice the ask: Like any skill, asking for donations improves with practice. Role play different scenarios with your team and get comfortable with making bold asks.

  4. Embrace rejection: Not everyone will say yes, and that's okay. Every 'no' brings you closer to a 'yes'. Learn from each rejection and use it to improve your future asks.
