The Challenges of Hospital Fundraising

Hospital development teams face unique hurdles in securing philanthropic support.

Learn how to navigate the complexities of the industry with care.

  • Misconceptions About the Hospital’s Wealth

When the community asks “How can you raise money when you charge so much for care?”

  • Donor Engagement & Retention

While patients and families may feel gratitude towards hospitals, turning that into long-term financial support needs a well-planned, data-driven approach.

  • Loss of Federal and State Funding

Nonprofit hospitals who rely on federal and state funds are under growing pressure financially as these distributions diminish.

  • Growing Demand & Financial Pressure

The rising costs of technology, staffing, and patient care create a constant need for philanthropic investment.

What can a custom fundraising strategy do for your hospital?

We can tailor a strategy that overcomes the challenges and complexities of hospital fundraising.

I’ve been in the healthcare fundraising profession since 1987. I became associated with PRIDE Philanthropy in 1988 and have been a client at two different health systems the entire time. I know of no other fundraising consulting firm that has a better approach to fund development in the small to medium sized shop. In both health systems, my development staff consisted of 3 people. I would estimate that the total dollars raised by both systems during my 35 year career in nearly $100 million. PRIDE teaches staff how to build a volunteer driven fundraising program that is sustainable and if managed properly, will be viable for decades.

Frederick Health adopted the PRIDE Philanthropy model of giving clubs back in 1989. Since then, our small development team working alongside Development Council volunteers, has raised nearly $100 million in charitable support from our six giving clubs. The hospital’s fundraising model and success is the envy of other local nonprofits. In addition to providing us the foundation for our fundraising success, I appreciate PRIDE’s proactive guidance as to how we can continually grow and modify our program to meet the changing wishes and expectations of an ever-increasing diverse donor and prospect base. I can’t imagine doing this work without them.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We do want to project our financial stability to the community to ensure trust that we will be here to serve for the long haul, but we also want to talk about need and growing access to local state-of-the-art care. The hospital is for all of us, and we want it to be the best of the best when we need it most! The hospital can afford to stay on the same path for years to come, but growth, new services, and faster responses will come from the community stepping up philanthropically.

  • One of the best ways is to build two lists, one list of projects your leadership has prioritized as important for the organization/community and a second list of projects your donors will support. The fundraising project should be what’s on both lists!

Don’t know where to start with that? Consider conducting a feasibility study!

  • Talking to your donors face to face is the best and only way to mitigate this! By sitting down one-on-one with key stakeholders, you will be able to clarify misconceptions and build mutual understanding to turn around your biggest and best supporters first.

  • That depends on the organization size, but in an ideal working environment, at least one full time fundraising staff person is important with strong support from leadership in participating in philanthropy each week.

  • Philanthropy can be a hospital’s most profitable service line by far with just a little structure and direction. Philanthropy is important because it can fund every other priority in the organization. It not only adds substantially to bottom line revenue, but also increases PR, marketing, and outreach efforts.

  • Start a Grateful Patient program! Hospitals in every state use this method to ethically navigate HIPAA and build a new and reliable pipeline for donors.

  • Respond promptly with a heartfelt thank-you, showing how the gift is used. Keep donors updated on ongoing projects or needs, but don’t pressure them. Offer meaningful ways to honor their loved one, letting donors choose their level of engagement.

  • Ask us how we can help! PRIDE specializes in building sustainable fundraising structure to be a large consistent revenue stream for the organization.

If you’re looking for a place to start, consider looking at your community healthcare needs as a place to inspire action to take on a big goal.
